Prince Harry is drawing renewed attention for a lighter, more self-deprecating public persona after joking about his thinning hair during an appearance on the Joe Marler Will See You Now podcast. The relaxed exchange prompted communications expert Nick Ede to argue that humor and authenticity could offer the Duke of Sussex a more effective way to rebuild his reputation than continued discussion of royal disputes.
Harry's public standing has changed markedly since he and Meghan Markle stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020 and moved to the United States. Interviews, lawsuits, the couple's Netflix projects and Harry's memoir Spare have frequently placed him at the center of stories about grievance, family divisions and conflict with the British establishment.
The podcast appearance offered a different version of the prince. Rather than revisit his relationship with King Charles, Prince William or the wider Royal Family, Harry spoke casually about everyday subjects and allowed himself to become the target of the joke.
"For Harry's reputation, authenticity is his greatest asset," Ede told the Daily Express. He said the conversation presented Harry less as a royal figure defined by controversy and more as "a relatable husband, father, and veteran with a good sense of humor."
Asked during the podcast about his grooming routine, Harry answered with a blunt three-part description: "Sh-t, shower, and shave." He then acknowledged his receding hairline, saying there is "nothing really happening on top."
Harry continued the joke by describing how he deals with the visible changes to his appearance. "I get a haircut, otherwise, I try not to look at what's happening," he said, laughing as the sentence trailed off.
The Duke also pushed back against the familiar description of him as a redhead. "People think I'm ginger, but I'm more sort of like sunset... auburn," he said, before adding, "I don't know why that's funny."
Harry said he had been bullied at school and called "carrot top," introducing a more personal note into an otherwise playful discussion. The remarks were delivered without the tightly controlled tone that has characterized many of his more consequential media appearances since leaving Britain.
Ede said that lighter conversations could help audiences reconnect with traits that once made Harry one of the most popular members of the Royal Family. "If he continues doing more conversations like this, rather than focusing on past grievances, it could be one of the smartest moves he's made for rebuilding his public image," he said.
Before his marriage to Meghan in 2018, Harry was frequently portrayed as one of the monarchy's most approachable figures. His public appearances often relied on humor, informality and an ability to interact naturally with military veterans, athletes and members of the public.
At the 2017 Invictus Games, Harry was photographed laughing with former President Barack Obama during a wheelchair-basketball match. During an earlier visit to Colorado, he joined a cheerleading routine and helped support a human pyramid, an episode that reinforced his reputation for ignoring some of the stiffness traditionally associated with royal engagements.
That image has been eclipsed in recent years by his legal battles, criticism of the British press and public accounts of tensions inside the Royal Family. His audience has also become more divided, with supporters viewing him as candid and independent while critics accuse him of repeatedly profiting from complaints about royal life.
Reaction to clips from the new podcast reflected that split. Some viewers welcomed the exchange as a return to the easygoing personality Harry displayed during his years as a working royal, while others questioned whether a relaxed media appearance could materially alter perceptions shaped by years of controversy.
Ede said the podcast revived qualities that had once been central to Harry's appeal. "It reminded people of the Prince Harry many connected with years ago, someone warm, self-deprecating and able to laugh at himself," he said.
