The Oppo R15, a device that breathed a bit of new life to the R-series, has catapulted the Chinese company to the top of the domestic market. It has become the best-selling device in the region for the second quarter of 2018 with a 5-percent market share.

Considered one of the ideal flagships available, the Oppo R15 beat out other handsets that include the Vivo X21, iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus and the Honor 7C. The Vivo X21 is not far behind with a 4-percent share of the market according to Counterpoint Research. The others had about 3-percent market shares.

The latest report also details how the sales for both Oppo and Vivo have improved compared to previous years. This is largely attributed to the new design and features that the latest handsets carry and yet priced very competitively. One of the features it the integration of the in-display fingerprint sensor which other phone manufacturers are slowly shifting towards.

Despite the success of the Oppo R15, Huawei remains at the top of the overall market share at 26-percent. Gizmo China points out how the 22-percent year-on growth has helped the company achieve its highest market share ever. Part of the credit goes to its sub-brand Honor which slowly carved a name for itself to eventually edge out rival brand Xiaomi.

Nevertheless, Oppo remains at second spot of the market with a 19-percent market share with Vivo (18-percent), Xiaomi (13-percent) and Apple (9-percent) following suit. With the latest figures out, each company now goes back to the drawing board to figure out how to improve their market share.

With the latest reports, companies are now busy trying to find ways to climb up the rankings. Xiaomi, one of the favorite phone brands offering great specs at a fair price, has reportedly started focusing on expanding its offline presence. As far as Oppo and Vivo, maintaining and improving their share will fall on their quest to develop and offer phones sporting unique designs together and impressive built-in cameras. Much of this was seen when the Oppo Find X and Vivo Nex invaded the premium smartphone segment.

It remains to be seen if the smartphone rankings will change in the coming months. Apple and Huawei are expected to unveil their new line of flagships to the market, potentially hinting at changes in the rankings in the smartphone market.

Regardless, consumers nowadays have grown wiser when it comes to buying the ideal smartphone. High-end specs remain tempting. But at the end of the day, the suggested retail price matters the most.
