China finds it difficult enough to maneuver diplomatically with the US slapping a fresh $200 billion tariff on Chinese imports. A senior official from the Chinese government said that the effect was almost as if the Trump administration held a "knife to its throat."
News AU presented the position of China being open to talks. In order for this to be worth discussing, both parties must treat the other with respect. While China holds reverence to the US, the problem is from the US side, Vice Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen said Tuesday. The US' actions were compared to the knife remark; with the US holding such large amounts to tariff restrictions, it was hard for China to seek negotiations.
The latest tariffs on Chinese goods took effect on Monday. Almost all the goods from China that are used by US industries are now heavily taxed, thanks to the Trump administration's punitive efforts. China sought equal ground by taxing $60 billion worth of US products imported to China, but it paled in comparison to the number of goods that the US slapped with tariffs.
China had been adamant about globalization. To that end, China had no recourse but to highlight the "bullying" being made by Washington, as well as the tactics that were set to intimidate. In its corner, China said that only bilateral cooperation on trade would be productive for all parties concerned.
There had been past talks between China and the US. Minister Shouwen, through SCMP, noted that four high-level talks had already been made between the countries; there were also agreements that were brought to the table and mutually agreed upon through filing a bilateral statement. When that happened, it was as if the trade spat was coming to an end.
The US appeared to have second thoughts about it, which made further negotiations between the two sides next to impossible. China also has no kind words for the Trump administration, whose tariffs have made it difficult for trade and economy to flourish further in China. A paper had been released where Beijing accused Washington of preaching "unilateralism, protectionism, and economic hegemony."
The US, in turn, said that China has been creating all sorts of problems with unfair practices-namely stealing secrets and intellectual property violations, all of which had been dispelled by the Chinese government.
