Brooklyn Beckham is a virtual unknown until the name of his father, David Beckham, is mentioned. The 19-year-old actually does modeling and has some 11.5 million followers on Instagram.
The supermodel posted a couple of pictures with the caption, “No place like Italy innit”, taken from his trip to Venice. One photo showed Asian tourists on a gondola while the other showed an Asian woman shopping at a local supermarket, the South China Morning Post said.
When the photos initially came out, Beckham got his share of bashing – particularly from Chinese social media users. His IG page got flooded with abusive comments with many accusing him of racism and insulting China.
Some even told the 19-year-old to never come to China to fish for money again while others demanded that he apologized for the Instagram post. Beckham has yet to air his side and on whether he was actually maliciously taking aim at Asians with the post. If that were the case, he just got himself in a heap of trouble.
For the record, Beckham is not the first model to get in trouble with the Chinese community. According to Shanghaiist, Gigi Hadid got into trouble as well last year when she shared a video on Instagram holding up a Buddha-shaped cookie and made squinty eyes. She eventually issued an apology when the whole thing got out of control. Could Brooklyn be doing anything the same soon?
If Beckham is wise, any plans by him to mend fences should be done at the earliest possible time. Hadid’s response came a bit too late and such even resulted in her getting blacklisted from the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in Shanghai later on.
There is no word on whether Brooklyn Beckham has any current or upcoming deals in China. To recall, he earned $75 million back in 2014 from Chinese endorsement deals. He also appeared in several ad campaigns in China, including regular appearances for the Sands Luxury Resort in Macau. He also appeared in an ad for Huawei’s Honor 8 back in 2016 where he earned $130,000.
Brooklyn eventually deleted the posts and changed the status of his Instagram to private when the bashing started. It remains to be seen if either he or his dad would tackle the sensitive issue although critics believe this would be best done at the earliest possible time.
In any case, it would help if his dad could lend a hand explaining (or apologizing) for the whole row. David Beckham is extremely popular in China and is a global ambassador for Chinese football. Some have questioned his parenting techniques, another issue that could drag him to the unfortunate issue.
