With the obsession of having perfect skin today, a lot of beauty products are emerging on the market. One of those contains hyaluronic acid that promises to give its users the youthful and picture-perfect look. But what is hyaluronic acid and why should it be a part of your beauty regimen?
"Hyaluronic acid is naturally abundant in our own bodies, mostly in joints and our skin," New York City-based celebrity facialist Jordana Mattioli told the South China Morning Post. Using the right acid on your face can be beneficial for your skin. It can address a lot of skin care problems and correct its texture.
Mattioli continued to say that hyaluronic acid has a structure called "polysaccharide," a sugar compound. This element is said to be special because "it can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water."
As people age, their skin loses its ability to keep it moisturized, resulting to dull-looking skin. So hyaluronic acid helps to retain the moisture by improving its ability to absorb and hold the water on the skin. It aids to fight dryness and gives an instant "plumping effect and filling in the fine lines," making it look hydrated.
"Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it helps skin attract and retain moisture," founder of Schique Beauty Jacqueline Schaffer, M.D., told SELF. It is naturally found in the human body, so it just helps to give the skin the "youthful glow."
Using hyaluronic acid is like using a real-life photo application filter. So if you ever see anyone raving on a beauty product that gives them the "dewy skin" on social media, they are probably using a brand with hyaluronic acid.
Hence, Dr. Schaffer recommended everyone to add hyaluronic acid serums to their nighttime skincare regimen. It is best used three or four times a week.
Additionally, because the human body already has hyaluronic acid, products with this element are very unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. It is well accepted by most skin types.
People who have sensitive skin can also use products that have hyaluronic acid with ease as their skin will surely won't have a negative reaction because of it. Also, anyone with severe acne problems can try to use hyaluronic acid to solve their skin problems.
"If you're on acne medication, try a hyaluronic acid serum to keep skin hydrated instead of an emollient cream," Mattioli advised. She also added that it is best to apply on "slightly damp skin" or immediately spread it over after you use vitamin-C serum to further lock in the moisture.
