World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) chief executive officer Vince McMahon has plans to revive one of his more obscure explorations of sports outside of wrestling sometime in the near future. This time, it seems that the McMahon's Alpha Entertainment is ready to bring back the XFL.
Fans of pro-wrestling and American football may be familiar with Vince McMahon's early foray into an American Football league sometime in 2001 with the first incarnation of the XFL. While unsuccessful with only one season under its belt, McMahon is persevering in bringing back the XFL by 2020.
According to Forbes, Vince McMahon - Through Alpha Entertainment - has poured in at least $100 million dollars into the XFL 2020 reboot league. The publication notes that aside from the initial $100 million, McMahon has also sold 306,000 of his WWE shares worth $22 million to potentially finance the restart of the XFL. McMahon's conviction for the success of the XFL is seen in more than just his significant investment in the league.
XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck announced the first eight cities and their venues being targeted by the XFL for their 2020 reboot games. The locations, as well as their game venues, are as ambitious as McMahon's significant investment in the XFL.
Included in the XFL location list are the cities of New York, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Seattle, Tampa Bay, and Washington D.C. The specified cities will also be the first to have teams playing for the XFL in 2020.
Forbes notes that the XFL's choice of venues may become an issue for a reboot of McMahon's professional football league considering that the smallest venue is Audi Fields in Washington D.C. With a seating capacity of at least 20,000 seats. The XFL will have its largest seating capacity in the MetLife Stadium in New York with a seating capacity of 82,500 seats.
Those familiar with the XFL's history will note that NBC is currently not involved in the re-establishment of Vince McMahon's re-imagined American Football league. But Forbes does mention that NBC may be expressing some interest in McMahon's revival of the XFL.
Fans of Vince McMahon's entertainment work who are looking forward to the return of the XFL will have to wait for a significant amount of time before the league's return. If everything regarding the XFL's reboot goes according to play, fans can look forward to the relaunch to occur sometime in February 2020.
