Bitcoin millionaire Wong Ching-kit was reportedly arrested in Hong Kong after making it rain HK$100 bills from a rooftop at one of the slum areas of the city recently.
Last week, Wong threw a swathe of dollar bills off a building in Sham Shui Pio, which is considered one of the poorest locations in Hong Kong. The stunt was posted on his company Epoch Cryptocurrency's Facebook page, wherein he is recorded as asking "does anyone believe that money can fall from the sky?" followed by a "rain" of cash falling from the taller building behind him.
The Hong Kong police reportedly arrested Wong for disorderly conduct shortly before he was about to launch another stunt. He was said to have been caught holding a thick wad of HK$500 bills and handing them out to bystanders at the same location while live streaming. This happened just a day after the rooftop stunt and Wong reportedly returned to the area in his Lamborghini. The authorities said that around HK$ 6,000 was recovered from the Sham Shui Pio rooftop scene, amounting to around US$767, although Twitter posts by different people had inaccurately said that hundreds of millions of dollars were dropped.
Wong is a known cryptocurrency enthusiast and supposedly a millionaire because of his bitcoin savvy. In several occasions online, he has described himself as "god" who "steals from the rich and gives the loot to the poor." The video is said to be a promo for a contest that will enable participants to win a lot of money, writes Shanghaiist. During his arrest, he even seemed unfazed as he was still live streaming and telling his viewers that he had been arrested, noting that his money was still intact and that he was not hurt, before ending the broadcast.
While the stunt was amusing, some members of the local crypto community were not impressed. Some say that Wong's bitcoin operations and his wealth were due to his pyramid-like way of doing business, though this has yet to be confirmed.
