There is a saying that goes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Though some might not seriously consider it, a new study shows why it is crucial for everyone to enjoy this meal as we prepare to begin our day.
The research, which was published in The Journal of Nutrition from the American Society for Nutrition last November 2018, explains how crucial it is for people to start prioritizing breakfast as compared to other meals such as lunch, dinner or snacks.
Throughout the study, led by Sabrina Schlesinger, MSc, Ph.D., head of the junior research group Systematic Reviews at the German Diabetes-Center in Dusseldorf, the team found out that by skipping breakfast once a week might contribute on getting type 2 diabetes of about six percent. The worse thing is, the frequent you miss this meal, the higher the risks become, according to Everyday Health.
Researchers included about 90,000 individuals to become participants in the study, where 4,935 of them are already diabetics. During the study, health information and lifestyle of everyone were examined and observed.
As the study progresses, the team discovered that the risk of acquiring the illness tend to go higher as compared to those who don't. They even noticed that on the fifth day of missing breakfast, the risk of acquiring diabetes rose to a staggering rate of about 32 percent.
The team also discovered that whatever the BMI of the person is, skipping the meal at the start of the day would still tend to increase diabetes risks. "Even after taking into account the BMI, skipping breakfast was associated with an increased risk of diabetes," Dr. Schlesinger said.
"This is important because most people think that breakfast skippers are always overweight or obese, and this could be the cause of increased risk for type 2 diabetes," explains Osama Hamdy, MD, Ph.D., medical director of the Obesity Clinical Program at Harvard Medical School's Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. The study sheds light into that belief and shows the real deal between their relationships.
Years have passed, nutritionist, parents, and doctors are always diligent in advising everyone how essential breakfast is in creating a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, because of so many factors, there are still a lot of people skipping this important morning routine.
As a matter of fact, a survey conducted by the NPD Group says that about 1 in 10 people in America alone prefer not to take any food to kick-start the day.
