Apple says goodbye to the usual LCD and says hello to the OLED on all of its 2020 iPhone releases.
The Wall Street Journal hinted that Apple is on its way to dropping the Light Crystal Display (LCD) which has been used for several iPhone releases for years now. This is apparently is to give way to an upgrade of all 2020 iPhone releases to the latest Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) display.
Apple's step of upgrading the 2020 iPhone releases to OLED technology gives way to a more flexible handset design to the said line of iPhone releases.
LCD requires a standalone backlight component that limits the phone design to the usual rectangular glass slab. On the other hand, OLED is individually lit which could set the next iPhone free from regular phone design thus making way for the exploration of irregular shapes. This could mean that the iPhone loyal customers may be seeing more innovations on the tech giant's product displays in the days ahead.
It was in May 2018 that the first report about Apple's transition to a full OLED display iPhone line up surfaced. The report hinted that the all OLED display iPhone line up will be released by 2019. However, a group of analysts immediately responded that the said timeframe will not be enough thus making the report appear to be inaccurate.
With the alleged transition of the Cupertino Tech Giant from LCD to OLED display, LCD panel suppliers are now rumored to be in trouble. Japan Display, Apple's official LCD panel supplier for one is allegedly seeking for investors to prepare them for the said transition.
Japan Display Inc, a company that specializes in Light Crystal Display is reported to be negotiating with Silk Road, a Chinese state-owned company and TPK Holdings Company from Taiwan. The negotiations allegedly involve an investment to include a stake of 30% with the possibility of greater control later.
Japan Display's bailout negotiations are not only in preparation for the upcoming Apple transition from LCD to OLED but to recover from the below than expected sales of the iPhone XR. iPhone XR's low sales average greatly affected Japan Display's earnings as more than half of their revenue comes from the tech giant as reflected in their revenue in the year ended March 2018.
Reports claim that Apple is now making preparations for the iPhone 2020 transition from LCD to OLED. They have allegedly purchased equipment for their OLED panel research in development sited in Taiwan and are negotiating with LG Display for an OLED display production facilities construction, according to MacRumors.
