As the world prepares for an economic slowdown this year, China's plateau province of Qinghai expressed its desire to eradicate absolute poverty in the region this year.

Beijing is joining the province in its bid to lift up the remaining 77,000 residents who are still impoverished in Qinghai, Xinhua reported. While this may still be a big number, it is worth noting that the province saw 176,000 people getting out of poverty in 2018.

An official with the Provincial Poverty Alleviation and Development Bureau told the outlet that 17 remaining poor counties are expected to be alleviated from poverty before 2020 arrives.

To reach this goal, the government has planned training programs for poor workers in the region. Rural tourism is also being encouraged among other Chinese across the country. A strategy has also been laid out for constructing facilities in various industries including technology, education, health, culture, and electricity.

Beijing has been hard at work over the past few years to ensure that poverty will no longer be an issue in China. In 2014, there were 736,000 residents who registered themselves as poor. While Qinghai is the least developed province in the country, it has since been lifted up through various programs provided by the government.

Over the weekend, the government established its first 5G base station in Qinghai's Xining City. Telecom firm China Mobile confirmed the news. The province previously lagged behind in terms of infrastructure but the latest project has paved the way for more opportunities for the province.

According to The Economic Times, the 5G network base construction is part of the local government's efforts in assisting Qinghai as it embarks on wireless technology ventures. Aside from 5G networking, the province is also considering information services as an offer to potential investors.

The 5G service in Qinghai is expected to help improve the province's communication systems with other regions across China. It will also enhance Internet speeds that should help in various growing industries within the area.

Qinghai's 5G service officially started operating last week. The peak download speed of this network could reach 1.3 Gbps, meaning it works 10 times faster than its predecessor, the 4G network.

The local government continues to come up with methods to push Qinghai to the limelight as it also announced that the province is considering services in the telemedicine and virtual reality markets.

Qinghai is a plateau province spread across the Tibetan region. The area practices very strong Mongol and Tibetan cultures. Known for its cotton or silk religious paintings, Qinghai is visited by tourists for the Amne Machin peak, a holy site for pilgrims on retreat.
