Our body has two kinds of fat, the first one called is the subcutaneous fat which is more visible found under the skin, while the second kind is the visceral fat which is hiding deeper in the body such as beneath the abdominal wall and around the organs. The visceral fat, also known as the hidden fat, is said to be associated with some health risks.
The subcutaneous fat is harder to lose, but it is not as dangerous as the hidden fat. In fact, experts noted it actually plays an important protective role to a certain degree. Rodney Sinclair, a professor of dermatology at the University of Melbourne, used cellulite as an example to explain the function of subcutaneous fat. He said that it acts as a shock absorber, it regulates the temperature of the body, and has a vital role in storing and releasing energy within the day.
The visceral fat, however, has been previously associated with several health problems, even with people who have a normal body mass index. Some of the associated conditions include insulin resistance, stroke, heart disease, and even increased risk of death in some cases. Healthline also noted the hidden fat increases the risk of colorectal cancer and breast cancer.
Some studies also suggest those who have higher levels of visceral fat are more likely to have weaker bones, pointing out the importance of strength training. This might be caused by reduced secretion of a bone-related growth hormone by the visceral fat cells, said Dr. Miriam Bredella, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Ian J. Neeland, a cardiologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, explained the hidden fat can affect local organs or even the entire system of the body. The good news is that visceral fat is much easier to eliminate, all you need to do is to exercise, diet, and have a healthy lifestyle, according to the new study Mayo Clinic Proceedings journal led by Dr. Neeland.
The high-intensity interval training is said to be effective and a time-efficient strategy to eliminate visceral fat mass. It's also important to follow physical activity guidelines such as strength training and cardio exercise. In the United States, interventions have been strongly encouraged particularly because of the rising obesity rates.
Other recommendations to eliminate the hidden fat include self-care to come with stress, as well as prioritizing adequate sleep. In addition, avoid eating processed foods as much as possible and make sure to also get your daily recommended intake of essential nutrients.
