Jeff Bezos' Amazon ditched the plans to build its second headquarters in New York City. The scrapped deal was a big loss to the state that it made NY's mayor, Bill de Blasio, to say that the retail giant just demonstrated an "abuse of corporate power."
Regardless of what mayor de Blasio thinks, Amazon stood by its decision to cancel its original proposal that was already approved by the New York state administration. Now, while the deal with NY is out, the plan to build Amazon's HQ2 is still on thus many US states are trying to appeal to the company in order to be considered as the next site for its new headquarters.
According to USA Today, more than 10 states are currently trying to woo Amazon in case the retailing firm decided to open the proposal again. Here are the top three states that have expressed their intent to do business with Amazon through its HQ2:
Newark, New Jersey immediately reached out to Amazon after learning about the collapsed deal with New York. The state's governor, Phil Murphy, revealed it is looking forward to a potential investment from Jeff Bezos' company.
"After learning of the decision to pull out of their chosen HQ2 location, I contacted Amazon and city of Newark stakeholders directly, continuing a constant dialogue that predates my time as governor," Gov. Phil Murphy told North Jersey last week. "New Jersey is open for business, and now more than ever, Newark is the clear choice as the next presence for Amazon corporate offices. Amazon now has the opportunity to join in Newark's story of a city on the rise."
The state of Miami is another candidate for the future site of Amazon's headquarters. Its mayor, Carlos Gimenez, suggested that South Florida is a good location to set up an office. The mayor disclosed that he wrote to Jeff Bezos so their state could be considered for Amazon's HQ2 plans.
"However, I would be remiss if I didn't take this opportunity to reopen the lines of communication because Miami, without a doubt, has the talent, technology, and low taxes to serve Amazon's needs," part of Gimenez's letter to Amazon's CEO reads via WSVN News.
Third, Chicago, Illinois is also pursuing Amazon to choose them as the future location for its second base. To convince Bezos, just like the other states, Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, jointly sent a letter to the company as well.
"You should take another look at Chicago. We will be happy to bring you back," they said.
Meanwhile, Warren, Michigan, West Palm Beach, Florida and Rochester, New York are the other regions that expressed intentions to be considered in Amazon's HQ2 project if it will still push through.
