The Gifted season 2 has recently ended, so fans are now asking if it will be renewed for the third season. That question remains on the air, especially the previous season just concluded on February 26. Still, fans are hoping and expecting for The Gifted season 3.

If you aren't familiar with the series, it is actually a spin-off from the X-Men series. The Gifted premiered in September 2018 on Fox network in the US, and in Fox UK but a few weeks behind, as per Otakukart. The series comes from the world of Marvel's X-Men and revolved around the Strucker family, in which after parents discovered their children possess mutant superpowers, they tried to change the world.

The fate of The Gifted season 3 is still hanging up in the air, but the finale of the second season gives fans some hope about what will happen next. The season 2's explosive ending teases viewers about the possibility of the third season. However, the ratings of The Gifted season 2 has significantly dropped averaging under 2 million each episode, wherein the first season hits a high of 4 million viewers and the overall season averaged about 3 million. Due to this downward turn in viewership, Fox may not likely renew the series for a while.

Showrunner Matt Nix also said during the Television Critics Association that if ever The Gifted was renewed for the third season, it might not air on Fox or broadcast television and it may likely be seen in a streaming service. And due to Disney-Fox deal, it's possible the series might be moving to the Disney+ which is set to be launched this year.

If ever confirmed, The Gifted season 3 might be released in the fall, rather than mid-season. The first season premiered in October 2017, while season 2 aired in September 2018. So it's possible the third season might kick-off around those months. But if the series moves to the streaming service, the release date could likely change since streaming services do not stick to network programming seasons.

Meanwhile, the season 2 finale reveals a tragic twist for one particular character. In the episode titled "oMens," Reed has decided to sacrifice himself to save everyone from Reeva. He used his power to incinerate her and himself in the process. Aside from that, Blink's portal also showed a glimpse of an apocalyptic world on the other side. She then invited her fellow mutants to come with her. So, as for the plot of The Gifted season 3, Nix said it would be informed by Days of Future Past, though not be any type of straight adaptation.
