With the apparent success of the recent DC movies and films, it is not surprising for the Wonder Woman franchise to produce another film that will star Gal Gadot all over again. And just like that, details and rumors about Wonder Woman 1984 started to make noise in between 2017 and 2018.
Originally, the supposed sequel of Wonder Woman is set to premiere in 2019. However, recent updates revealed that the premiere date of the upcoming film is now set on June 5, 2020, which is a much later date. Gal Gadot herself shared this on her Twitter account last October 2018. And this update was confirmed by Warner Brothers.
About Polygon's article about Wonder Woman 1984, the new release date places the said film during the summer season which is the same season when the first Wonder Woman movie was released. And this "lands the film exactly where it belongs," Warner Brothers President of Domestic Distribution, Jeff Goldstein, explained in an interview.
When this news hit the media, there were no negative reactions spiraled. But it caused the fans to theorize several things about the upcoming film in terms of its plot.
Now, DC fans, especially the Wonder Woman fanatics, perceive the film as a continuation of Diana Prince's life. And since the setting is more than 70 years later, a lot of people tries to find clues and hints on its comic book counterparts. However, it has been revealed that Wonder Woman 1984 is not a sequel to the first movie.
As per CBR, Gal Gadot and director (also writer) Patty Jenkins shared this revelation during the recent Comic-Con International. This film is "a new chapter and story," the title lead actress explained when being asked about the plot. Jenkins also confirmed this by stating that she wants it as a whole new movie that offers uniqueness.
With these revelations at hand, many fans think that it all makes sense now since Chris Pine will return as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman 1984. And as anyone would recall it, Steve Trevor died in the first Wonder Woman film.
Even so, DC comic book readers are still looking forward to seeing a few continuities between the first and upcoming Wonder Woman films. There were even rumors that Steve Trevor is alive because of Cheetah and Urzkataga, along with Maxwell Lord, who are all seen as Wonder Woman's enemies. Nevertheless, these are only speculations and wild theories from fans and viewers.
