Riverdale's next musical episode is finally unveiling on Wednesday, March 20. It will feature a take on the popular Heathers: The Musical, but it will expectedly come with a twist.

According to the episode synopsis, Riverdale season 3 episode 16 will delve on a show within a show concept. The characters will be staging their very own high school musical yet again, but the episode will also show what happens in between the rehearsals.

There will be drama and conflict behind the scenes featuring Cheryl (played by Madelaine Petsch), Betty (played by Lili Reinhart) and Evelyn (played by Zoe De Grandmaison). Outside of the musical, however, Veronica (played by Camila Mendes) and Archie (played by KJ Apa) will have personal stuff to deal with as well.

Meanwhile, E! News confirmed that Cole Sprouse (as Jughead) would sing in Riverdale Season 3 Episode 16. Photos from the episode show the character not looking especially pleased to be on stage, but Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed Sprouse would finally belt out a tune, unlike last season.

"Last year, we had a blast doing Carrie," the showrunner said. "This year, we wanted to honor another iconic teen movie. Heathers: The Musical is BIG FUN, with great roles for the Riverdale kids."

Heathers: The Musical is based on a classic film released in 1989, which starred Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, and Shannen Doherty. It's about a group of popular girls in high school, who are all named Heather and who Slater's character, J.D. planned to murder.

Ryder played the misfit Veronica who became romantically involved with J.D., and she realized that her schoolmates' mysterious death could be linked to him. Heathers: The Musical touched on high school friendships and jealousy, romance and murder - the very same ingredients that make Riverdale interesting.

Ashley Murray (as Josie) told Seventeen that she has never heard of Heathers until they had to do the episode for Riverdale season 3 episode 16. Casey Cott (as Kevin), on the other hand, is familiar with the story and he's friends with some of the cast of the actual musical play on Broadway. He hopes they will appreciate what they have done on Riverdale.

Meanwhile, this week's episode of Riverdale season 3 is the second airing since the death of Luke Perry (as Fred Andrews). During a visit on the daytime talk show The View, Sprouse said that the writers of Riverdale have already planned a story to explain Perry's character's loss yet Sprouse is not allowed to talk about it for now.
