Disney recently rehired James Gunn to direct Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which leads to the questions about Suicide Squad 2's future. The 53-year-old director is also set to do the sequel to the 2016 David Ayer's film, and it looks like the filmmaker will prioritize the DC film.

According to CinemaBlend, DC employed Gunn after Disney let him go. Now that the latter got his service again, he reportedly would prioritize Suicide Squad 2 over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Gunn even already has a plan of how he would direct Suicide Squad 2. He would be moving further away from Ayer's take of the original 2016 film. In an interview with DC Extended Universe producer Peter Safran, he revealed the movie would not be called a sequel and would bear the title The Suicide Squad instead.

"First of all, we don't call it Suicide Squad 2 'cause it's a total reboot, so it's The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it," Safran told JoBlo Movie Network. "It's everything you would hope from a James Gunn script, and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot, and I know that we will deliver a lot."

Suicide Squad 2 was described to be a re-launch of the original film with the creative vision of Gunn. It would also have a new set of characters and stars. However, it might still get some elements from the 2016 film, like some of the original cast.

Idris Elba joins Suicide Squad 2 as Deadshot, replacing Will Smith due to the latter's busy schedule, per Digital Spy. But, there are rumors Margot Robbie will return to reprise her role as Harley Quinn. The 28-year-old star may likely make a comeback as she will also star in Birds of Prey, and one of the iconic roles of the film.

DC has yet to reveal if Karen Fukuhara, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Jai Courtney will return to reprise their roles as Katana, Killer Croc, and Captain Boomerang, respectively. But, there are also reports that Jay Hernandez will make a comeback to play El Diablo's role once again. After his explosive exit in the original film, the VFX clip confirmed he survived the ordeal.

On the other hand, Dave Bautista, who has been supporting Gunn since the beginning, is also rallying to be a part of Suicide Squad 2. There are no words yet about the film's plotline, but theories are suggesting Amanda Waller will be double-crossing the team by deploying them on a mission that they may not survive.

Suicide Squad 2 might begin its production anytime this year. It was also recently announced that the movie would be officially out on August 6, 2021.
