A wedding is an expression of love and hope. Though it is executed depending on the religion, culture, and social classes of the people involved, there is but one thing that it is common between every country around the world -the union involves two different people.
But one girl named Feng Jinjin defies the norms by preparing for a wedding celebration for just one person, and that is for herself alone, South China Morning Post reports. Complete with all the preparations and formality of an ordinary wedding, Feng decided to marry no one but herself.
Feng's decision came unknown to all her visitors even to her close friends until the red-themed engagement party was executed in Shanghai. With her elegant fitting dress, he explained that her decision is solely a "part of finding and liking herself."
On January 27, with around 20 friends as her witness, Feng finally married herself at one of the most beautiful beaches of Bali. She also wore her traditional red qipao, which is one of the important accents in a traditional Chinese wedding.
Feng's marriage caused mixed emotions to a lot of people. Other people consider Feng's move as "a new category of eccentricity." But to some, it's a form of accepting and loving oneself despite life's brokenness and other factors.
Prior to Feng's decision, the young woman was in an unhappy marriage, which she hasn't chosen in the first place but her parents. It was then when she read Joy Chen's book entitled Do Not Marry Before Age 30 that she realized how bad her choices were and the situation she's in. This prompted her to make a decision, move on with her situation and learn to live her life the way she wanted it to be.
She divorced her husband, left her child to her parents, and pursued her dreams in the US and attend Berkshire Hathaway's shareholders' meeting. There she was given the opportunity to start a brand new life and become the person she wants to become ever since. And that is to become an entrepreneur.
Books have always been a great way to influence other people. It was in 1978 when the books, written by Jack Welch and Warren Buffett, became the vessel that taught a lot of people to embrace Western capitalism.
Now, it's as if the history is repeating itself as feminism in America is influencing Chinese women through manuscripts. "I identity as a feminist. Feminism is nothing to be ashamed about," Feng says.
