Avatar 2 is the product of the great success of Avatar, which was also confirmed by its creator, James Cameron, that he already planned 2 more sequels with the first one previously planned to have been released in 2014. However, due to its complicated technology that requires new and high machineries in order to capture underwater scenes by motion tracking, Cameron's epic science fiction film was delayed moving to a currently planned release on December 18, 2020, exactly eleven years after the American release of the first film, with the following sequels to be released between 2021 and 2025. What viewers will have to expect from its sequel is that the story has widened the universe while the other moons of Polyphemus will be explored.

James Cameron has included certain scenes in the first film for future story follow-ups while he also planned to shoot the sequels back-to-back with the filming of Avatar 2 coinciding with the principal photography of Avatar 3 in New Zealand. The first sequel, Avatar 2 will focus on the ocean of Pandora and also feature more of the rainforest. James Cameron has intended to capture footage for this sequel at the bottom of the Mariana Trench using a deepwater submersible. The sequel will still follow through with the characters of Jake and Neytiri, with humans to return as the antagonists of the story.

One of the highlights of the story and something that James Cameron has generously given as hint was a "time jump in its plot." The story will be from the point of view of  8-year-old Tuk hiding under the structure and peeking in. It will feature a scene between Jake and Neytiri taking place from Tuk's perspective: "There's a three-page argument scene between Jake and Neytiri, a marital dispute, very, very critical to the storyline." In an update, Tuktirey is the daughter of Jake and Neytiri and their youngest child, mostly goes by the nickname "Tuk." She is portrayed by actor Trinity Bliss.

Now, take note that the director described the child as being eight years old which could suggest that there will be major time jump somewhere in Avatar 2's timeline. Looking through the weight of the scenes involved, James Cameron and the rest of the cast, most especially Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will have their Na'vi characters undergo a demand to face complications that only human married couples have experienced. The essence of Avatar has already been revealed to be centered on family and it is safe to assume that the plot is moving to that direction. Avatar 2 is expected to be released by December 18, 2020.
