Erica Shepherd (played by Jennifer Carpenter) thinks the CIA is deliberately messing up their investigations into the activities of Mikhail Tal (Lev Gorn) in The Enemy Within season 1 episode 9. So, to confirm her hunches, Erica will have to spy on the biggest spy agency in the United States.

The ex-CIA deputy director turned criminal tells Will Keaton (played by Morris Chestnut) her plans to spy on the CIA, as seen in the teaser of The Enemy Within season 1 episode 9. Her declaration came after one of Tal's more important people escaped the clutches of the CIA and Erica, as well as Will, was brought over to track the escapee down, as per the episode synopsis.

The upcoming episode, which will air on Monday, April 22, at 10:00 p.m. on NBC, will have Erica and Will unlikely leaning on each other to figure out what the CIA could be hiding. This should bring to light a few things about how far is the CIA invested in their case, and it may also put the dynamics between Erica and Will to a test.

Will had to set aside his trust issues with Erica ever since he was tasked to work with her on this Tal case. How far will he go to rely on Erica this time around now that it's the CIA they have to be snooping into?

"He represents the FBI; I represent the CIA," Carpenter said of the relationship between the two lead characters, Erica and Will, as per Assignment X. "So, it always starts with whatever scene we're looking at. Because we're usually going head to head. We have the same common goal, but we're opposing forces."

Meanwhile, The Enemy Within season 1 episode 8, which aired last Monday, April 16, finally delved into Erica's back story. Three years ago, she betrayed the United States and gave the enemy, Tal, the identities of four important agents to the Russian terrorist.

Through a series of flashbacks, The Enemy Within showed how Erica was left with no choice because the Russians have a mark on her daughter. She did what she had to do as a mother who is saving her child.

It was a desperate decision, but it also showed that Erica is not a traitor despite what the FBI and Will might believe. However, the episode also revealed that Erica has plans and she's definitely up to something, which still makes her suspicious.
