Ever since the Night King was introduced in Game of Thrones, a lot of fans have theorized several things about his real identity. And when it was revealed that he was one of the First Men and was created by the Children of The Forest, these did not stop the fandom to conclude more plots and twists about the real identity of the Night King.
Things got even more interesting when Game of Thrones Season 8 premiered on Monday. At the end of the episode, we all know that the Night King and his army just passed through the Last Hearth and now marching forward to Winterfell. Tormund and company saw Lord Ned Umber (who later turned) with another cryptic message from the Night King. And again, this cryptic message is in the form of a spiral-like symbol.
The spiral-like symbol is not seen for the first time. The Night King and his army always leave marks like this even on the first season of Game of Thrones. However, things just got more interesting when Game of Thrones Season 8 arrived.
As you may know, Jon Snow is a true Targaryen. And we saw how he was able to ride Rhaegal while Daenerys rides Drogon as per usual. This is a very symbolic scene since dragons are much more tame to a person who has Targaryen blood.
Also, the showrunners and producers of the show revealed during the official Game of Thrones Season 8 Winterfell behind-the-scenes preview that "only Targaryens can ride dragons." So, what does this say about the identity of the Night King?
If you may recall the last few episodes of Game of Thrones Season 7, we all saw how the Night King caught and turned Viserion after the battle that happened beyond the Wall. And just before the seventh season wrapped up, we all saw how the Night King rode Viserion and used it to finally destroy the Wall.
So, if the Targaryens are the only persons who can ride dragons, does this mean that the Night King is also a Targaryen?
It is also worth mentioning that the coat of arms of the House of Targaryen appears to be a dragon with three heads. In considering its overall appearance, the positioning of the dragon forms a spiral-like image due to its three heads, one tail, and two wings. And looking again at the symbols and marks that the Night King leaves, it seems that it's a tell that he is a Targaryen.
But of course, this is just one of the possible theories. And for sure, things will further unveil once Game of Thrones Season 8 continues to air. The next episode is set to premiere on April 21, on HBO.
