Throughout the years, there have already been a lot of posts that say how beneficial wine is to the body. But how about the liver?
We all know how alcohol can be very dangerous to the liver. With the alcohol content wine has, is it still good to the body or not? How healthy is wine?
"It's an antioxidant," says Dr. John Rivas, a liver specialist in Hollywood. "We have an epidemic of fatty liver disease in this country with supersized portions and a lot of calories from fat. Wine helps protect the liver from inflammation caused by fat".
Rivas further explained that though wine can be a great help to the body, there is still one important thing that everyone who loves this drink and its benefits should remember. Everything can be bad if not taken moderately. So it is important not to drink more than two glasses of wine per day, as reported in South China Morning Post.
The expert also shared that though it might be tempting to drink a lot of wine because of its health benefits, its antioxidant properties, and also its taste, drinking too much of it is still not recommended. As doing so would just end up "causing damage."
An online health care blog named WebMD shared that by consuming a lot of this beverage, one's liver might be at stake. In a study conducted in Stéphanie Pelletier of the Service d'Hépatogastroentérologie et Acoologie in Nîmes, France, researchers found out how wine can still cause cirrhosis, a life-threating condition that can cause damages to the liver.
Meanwhile, drinking wine can also extend one's life. According to a study published in 2018, one of the experts behind the study, Dr. Claudia Kawas of University of California, learned that by drinking this beverage regularly can decrease the risks of early death by 18 percent.
Also, consuming wine doesn't just improve the liver's health and help lengthen the life of a person; drinking wine regularly can also help improve people's mental health especially as they grow old. Through a study conducted in Hines, Illinois - based Loyola University Medical Center, researchers found out that with moderate drinking, red wine can lower the risk of dementia, especially among seniors.
Meanwhile, Kawas shared that by recommending people to drink wine regularly doesn't mean to consume it daily. She clears, what she meant is that "it just has to be [consumed] sometimes."
