The favorite characters of the viewers of the period drama Call the Midwife on BBC and PBS are still going to make it until the end of season 9. Creator Heidi Thomas revealed that she's currently writing the last parts of the next installment, which is estimated to be back on the air sometime in 2020.
Speaking with the BFI & Radio Times Festival, Thomas confirmed that she's in the middle wrapping up the storylines for Call the Midwife season 9. She also confirmed that nurses Trixie (played by Helen George), Lucille (played by Leonie Elliott) and Valerie (played by Jennifer Kirby) are still going to be very much a part of the next installment.
"They're all still alive at the end," Thomas said, as per Express. "As we're going forward to the sixties there will be huge opportunities for the characters. I think the nurses will get opportunities to spread their wings, they'll be more medical developments and socially women are starting to expect a lot more."
Call the Midwife received a renewal for season 9, 10 and 11 with eight episodes each from the BBC and season 8 has recently ended its run on PBS for its American viewers. The show usually airs months ahead in the U.K. before the U.S. broadcast and aside from the season renewals, Call the Midwife will also have Christmas specials for every year until 2022.
The ninth season will open in 1965. The cast has started production last March, which also includes the Christmas episode for December 2019 according to Digital Spy.
Details of Call the Midwife season 9 are being kept under wraps, but there are speculations Trixie will be moving up the ladder and take on more responsibilities at the Nonnatus House, which echoes what Thomas has said in the interview. It's also possible that Trixie could eventually become a doctor.
Lucille, on the other hand, had somewhat a happy ending in Call the Midwife season 8 when she met Cyril (played Zephryn Taitte). Valerie, on the other hand, has a more challenging future ahead of her given her shocking discovery about her grandmother.
BBC has not yet announced the exact premiere date of Call the Midwife season 9. It is expected, however, that BBC will have an update about the next installment before the Christmas special airs.
