ABC has ordered for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 ahead of Season 6's release. As the show now returns, the agents are looking to find a way to save Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) as they come across someone who exactly looks like Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg).

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 is now in production as Season 6 currently airs on ABC. In an interview with Collider, executive producers Jeph Loeb and Jed Whedon talked about the weird situation Fitz is in.

"I would just say that, as weird as that seems, that weirdness will be seen," Whedon said. Loeb, on the other hand, explained one of the things that made Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. so special is they could take the beloved characters and put a major twist that would turn them into unexpected and weird places.

They feel it very rewarding when they get to the end of a particular arc or season that they manage to get them back all together. Loeb even teased it would be something that they would tackle come Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7.

Whedon also added they have stepped out of their comfort zone in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 and Season 6 by featuring Simmons on the planet. It also includes stories that are out of the norm of formal storytelling.

So in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 and Season 6, he teased they would do a lot of more eccentric storylines that are different from fans used to see. As ABC renewed the show even before the new season came out, Whedon also hinted the current season would never end in a satisfying way, but with a big question mark.

To recall, ABC has renewed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for season 7 in November 2018. The new season would only have 13 episodes just like Season 6.

According to Deadline, the early renewal is probably because of the "cast's option," and the "pick up the actors' options." The order of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 reportedly would let the two shorter seasons to be filmed back-to-back, which would reduce the network's expenses.

When the show's move to a new schedule was announced in May, ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey made it clear Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 6 would not be the show's final installment. "We don't plan it as a final season," she said.

Dungey revealed Season 6 seemed to be its strongest season. Thus, ABC renewed the show right away. As the series is said to have a "loyal passionate base" and incredibly does well in delayed viewing, the coming of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 is no surprise.
