The fire still rages on Federer's eyes to claim more wins and it was evident on the former world number one's game plan. According to Tennis World, Federer revealed his burning passion for tennis by continuing to play and work on improvements. It's clear to him that younger players are out to put an end to his campaign but he's not about ready to cede an inch.
It is well-known that clay is not a favored ground by Federer but he opted to keep playing if only to master further his skills. The same report indicated that Federer plays on clay chiefly to prepare for the Wimbledon and U.S. Open.
"I think he wants to work on his game ahead of Wimbledon and U.S. Open. He is still doing too well. I think he wants to win both Wimbledon and the US Open," the report quoted Sjeng Schalken, himself a former pro slugger, as saying.
However, the multi-titlist is quite realistic and ready acknowledges that he can't win everything. Federer is a firm believer in the natural process of evolution, fully aware that soon his bio clock will be working against his plans.
Still, the plan stays for the Swiss tennis champ, already known as a living legend, to collect as many trophies as possible prior to retirement. Federer intends to build on his legacy and live up to the suggestion that he is the greatest tennis player in the Open era.
Beyond the purpose of capturing the upcoming Wimbledon and U.S. Open this year, Federer seeks what he deems as the ultimate honor and that is to eclipse the most ATP wins. According to Express UK, Jimmy Connors still holds that distinction with 109 ATP championship title. The way that Federer plays, he seems en route to outpace Connors soon.
And even as Federer works to rewrite history, he is eyeing to dislodge current rival Novak Djokovic. The Serb is feted for his Golden Masters triumph - he has managed to win all ATP 1000 titles. To punctuate his undoubtedly illustrious career, Federer is looking to replicate this honor won by Djokovic.
As part of an elite circle of tennis players who have all the Grand Slam championships - the Australian Open, the French Open, the Wimbledon and the U.S. Open - Federer becoming the best in the ATP tour and cementing his stature in the tennis worlds appears already in the bag for him. He can only hope though that injuries will not get in the way.
