Star Trek: Discovery season 3 was officially confirmed, the announcement was made in February 2019 which is a few weeks after the second installment premiered on CBS All-Access. But following the renewal announcement, there are only a few details about it.
Executive VP at CBS All-Access Julie McNamara said the second season of Star Trek: Discovery was a massive success as it exceeded their expectations in "driving subscriber growth" and "generating a phenomenal response." Thus, it isn't a surprise that the show has been renewed for a third season.
Currently, CBS has not yet announced the official air date of Star Trek: Discovery season 3. It can be recalled the first season debuted in September 2017 and concluded in February 2018. The second season, on the other hand, premiered in January 2019 and ran until April 2019. So, it's unlikely fans will see the third installment until spring 2020.
As for the cast of Star Trek: Discovery season 3, both Doug Jones as Saru and Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham are expected to return in the series. Other characters expected to join the third season include Jett Reno (played by Tig Notaro), Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), Lt. R.A. Bryce (Ronnie Rowe), Lt. Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo), Lt. Gen Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon), and Lt. Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts).
Also, Lt. Nilsson (Sara Mitich), Cmdr. Nhan (Rachael Ancheril), Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), Ensign Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), and Lt. Cmdr. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) are all on board. However, Anson Mount will not reportedly reprise his role as Captain Pike as he only signed a one-year deal, while Rebecca Romijn will not be back as the Starship Enterprise's Number One. It's also unknown if Ethan Peck's Spock will join the third season as well.
The plot of Star Trek: Discovery season 3 was not yet unveiled. But in season 2, the storyline culminated in the plan of Michael Burnham to lead her starship about a thousand years into the future - and it's a one-way trip. Alex Kurtzman, the showrunner of the two seasons, said the third installment would be in a new direction.
He said the conclusion season 2 sent the series into the future and adding that they are now "free from canon." Meanwhile, Michelle Paradise has been named co-showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery season 3, so she'll be working alongside Kurtzman. Paradise also co-wrote the 2-part season 2 finale, titled "Such Sweet Sorrow."
