Whether you are rich or poor, girl or boy, genius or not, there is but one thing that is inevitable in life that stands as a common ground for everyone-death. Everyone is not exempted of it.
The World Health Organization says, through a recent survey that about 56.9 million deaths happened worldwide in 2016 alone. Most of these deaths are caused by stroke and ischaemic heart disease (combined number of deaths of about 15.2 million), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (3 million deaths), lung cancers (1.7 million deaths), diabetes (1.6 million deaths), and suicide (800,000 deaths per year).
Aside from the death rates that are rising dramatically every year, there is also another thing that alarms the medical field recently. According to a recent study published in JAMA Network Open, the number of female youths' suicide deaths are now rising and becoming at par with the number of male embracing death by killing themselves, the Medscape reports.
To come up with the results, researchers included the data information of about 85,000 youths who committed suicide between 1975 and 2016 in their study. Gathered from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention database, the researchers were able to analyze how the number of deaths increased throughout those years.
Years ago, the gap between the numbers of suicide deaths among men was much higher than females. But the results of the study shows how these numbers are becoming narrow. As a matter of fact, in 2007, suicide rates among girls age 10 to 14, have rapidly increased by about 13% compared to the 7% rising death rate of their counterpart. On the other hand, the suicide rate among girls, with ages 15 to 19, have increased by about 8% and 3.5% respectively, as reported by TIME.
"What we're seeing is alarming", says study co-author Donna Ruch, a researcher with the Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio. The expert added, the results show how females nowadays are now "thinking about suicide more" and, with despair, tries to give in to it in the end.
The head expert of the research explained how important their study is especially when determining the changes among people and understanding their behavior. Through the study, the experts aim to be able to come up with strategies that will focus on preventing suicide among boys and girls specifically.
To be able to help decrease the growing number of suicide deaths among youths, the experts behind the study advises parents to always communicate with their children regarding their thoughts and even about their mental health. It is better for them to feel accepted and loved specially during this time where suicidal thoughts are rampant among their generation.
