The season finale of The Blacklist season 6, which aired on NBC last Friday, May 17, left viewers in another confusing state. The show, however, will have a chance to answer whatever questions fans might have when The Blacklist season 7 returns this fall.
With the way things are going, it's possible that The Blacklist could still extend its run and have a season 8. Creator and executive producer Jon Bokenkamp told TV Line that they have thought beyond The Blacklist season 7 because no one is eager to end the series just yet.
"We talk about it, yeah. We talk about it. Especially in a serialized show like this, where there is a mythology, we never want to stretch it. We never want to take advantage of that," Bokenkamp said. "And yet, at the same time, I think we really have a lot of stories to tell. Going into season 7, John and I both feel very confident that we have a lot of work yet to do. I don't think anybody's racing to the finish line."
But before The Blacklist season 8 has to happen, viewers are more eager to find out what's going to happen next in The Blacklist season 7. There will be a new storyline to explore now that it has been revealed that the mother of Liz (played by Megan Boone) is still alive.
No one was more shocked to learn that Katarina Rostova (played by Laila Robins) has resurfaced than Red Reddington (played by James Spader). After coming face-to-face with his former lover, Katarina poked him with a needle and then took him away.
Fans of The Blacklist are now wondering if this Katarina is not an imposter. More than that, they also want to know if Red will survive his kidnapping. Since Spader is returning for The Blacklist season 7 the bigger question that the show will have to answer next season is how Reddington will outsmart Katarina.
"I don't think we should pretend that James Spader is no longer going to be on The Blacklist," showrunner John Eisendrath said via Variety. "He's alive, but despite that, the end opens up an incredible number of possibilities.
Eisendreth didn't want to confirm whether Red has encountered the real Katrina. Bokencamp said that for now, fans have to take it at face value when Red uttered her name at the end of The Blacklist season 6.
NBC has retained The Blacklist season 7 on its Friday slot for the 2019-2020 run. However, NBC has not yet announced the upcoming installment's premiere date.
