A sequel to Detective Pikachu is reportedly in development at Legendary Studios following the successful box office run of the first film featuring Ryan Reynolds as the voice of the lead Pokémon character.
According to ComicBook.com, The Pokémon Company has been more open in exploring the franchise's movie developments. Apparently, there are initial plans to do more live-action films and expand the franchise in the movies given the vast world of Pokémon.
Of course, it helped that Detective Pikachu, which was released in theaters on May 9, is doing well at the box office. According to Variety, the live-action film has crossed over the $200-million mark on its second week.
Detective Pikachu is also a box office hit in China, where it earned $70 million on week two. It's also faring well in Russia, Germany, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
Critic reviews for Detective Pikachu have also been mostly positive and it has become one of the best video game-turned-movie productions to date. Detective Pikachu also received a grade "A-" rating from CinemaScore to represent the audience's appreciation for the film.
But while Legendary hasn't confirmed the sequel rumors, fans cannot help but wonder what will happen in the next installment. Will the father of Tim Goodman (played by Justice Smith) still be a huge part of the story?
Detective Pikachu actually ended with a twist to reveal that Reynolds wasn't just the voice of Pikachu. He also assumed the role of the missing father, Harry Goodman, and father and son eventually restored their relationship when the credits closed.
Writer Benji Sammit told Polygon that this twist was based in the video game on the Nintendo 3DS even if it wasn't quite obvious since the father was never actually found in the game. They took it a step further by making this plot explicitly detailed in Detective Pikachu.
"[It was] the way it connected it to the overall theme and Howard Clifford's plan of wanting people to evolve into better versions of themselves, the way Pokémon do."
But how will Pikachu be back in the sequel if Harry's human body has already been separated from the Pokémon? Will someone else be voicing the monster character if Reynolds will be playing the human in the sequel?
Detective Pikachu is still running in theaters across the globe on its third week.
