Ford’s long-teased Mustang-inspired electric vehicle is coming soon as the brand reportedly set to release it in production this 2020 aiming to compete with Tesla Model Y. Ford Mustang inspired EV is said to be named “Mach E” and will be available in two versions - an entry level with a smaller battery and a sports version with higher performance and autonomy.
Except for the Ford Focus Electric that was a development that took advantage of internal combustion rather than pure electric, Ford does not have any other electric models in its range. On 2020, Ford is going to make a big jump to the EV market with their Mustang-Inspired EV that will spearhead Ford’s future line of EV.
The Ford Mustang inspired EV has a provisional name and is not yet confirmed if Ford will keep Mach E. Ford abandoned its intention to call it "Mach 1" due to the multiple requests of the Mustang enthusiasts. For that reason, Ford recently registered the "Mach-E" brand, a perfect compromise between its electric character and its aesthetic inspiration.
The Ford Mach E will be an all-electric crossover inspired by the successful Mustang of the oval brand and will take advantage of a new platform that allows both rear and four-wheel drive. The final design is still unknown, but Ford will present a concept close to production sometime this year.
There are still only a few details known about Ford Mach E. One of these is that Ford officials have announced that its approved autonomy will be 600 kilometers. With this, the figure would exceed the Tesla Model X with 565 kilometers, the Jaguar I-Pace with 470 kilometers and also the Long Range versions of the new Tesla Model Y which is said to achieve 540 kilometers. Another detail is that the Ford Mach E would offer two versions of the electric SUV.
The Ford Mach E is expected to be priced competitively in the US to be able to reach the mass market with more crossovers and fully electric SUVs. During the last Go Electric event held in Amsterdam in April of this year, Ford presented at least 16 new hybrid and electric models to be launched on or before 2023 including electrified versions of the Fiesta, the Focus, the Mondeo, the Explorer and the electrification of the range commercial, with the Transit and the Tourneo.
The Michigan-based automaker is also working on a more affordable electric SUV code-named CX430, which will be based on the latest Focus platform and whose design will be similar to Kuga's, and which has been in Ford's product plan for years.
