Meizu officially announced the 16Xs today at a price that's easily achievable by all. That being said, it makes us wonder why people are willing to spend almost a thousand bucks for a smartphone.
Starting on the front, the 16Xs features a 6.2-inch Samsung-produced Super AMOLED display with Full HD+ (2,232 x 1,080) resolution and an in-display fingerprint scanner. Even with the 16MP selfie camera taking up some bezel space, the 16Xs features a 90.29 percent screen-to-body ratio.
The Meizu 16Xs is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 found in the Moto Z4, 6GB of RAM, either 64GB or 128GB of storage, and a 4,000mAh battery that supports Meizu's mCharge 18W fast charging standard. Lastly, the 16Xs runs Flyme OS 7 on top of Android 9 Pie.
The back of the smartphone has the triple camera system comprising of 48MP Samsung S5KGM1 sensor, 8MP ultra wide-angle sensor, and a 5MP depth sensor. The ultra wide-angle sensor features a 118.8-degree field of view and 13mm focal length.
Earlier this week, camera samples showing this lens in action have been published online. The pictures were posted on Weibo by a Meizu engineer and show a standard photo and an ultra-wide angle photo of the same location. The Meizu 16Xs will be the manufacturer's first triple camera phone.
The ultra-wide angle photo is getting a lot of praise for practically having no barrel distortion. Barrel distortion is an aberration common to ultra-wide angle lens and what it does is curve straight lines inwards. This happens when the field of view of the lens is wider than the size of the sensor. The camera tries to compensate by bending straight lines to fit in. The effect is usually corrected by post-processing software and it seems the Meizu 16Xs does a very good job in doing that.
The Meizu 16Xs comes in four colors: Midnight Black, Atlantis Blue, Coral Orange, and Silk White. It is priced at CNY 1,698 (roughly Rs. 17,100) for the 6GB + 64GB model, and CNY 1,998 (roughly Rs. 20,100) for the 6GB + 128GB model. It will be available in Midnight Black, Blue, Coral Orange, and Silk White color options and will go on sale in China from June 10. The EP2C Type-C headset launched alongside is priced at CNY 129 (roughly Rs. 1,300).
The phone will officially launch in China on June 10. It will also have an Indian and European release in July.
