At the Apple WWDC 2019, the company unveils a new standalone operating system for its iPad devices called the iPadOS. The new operating system brings a new home screen with expandable widgets. These new widgets are similar to those that you can typically find in the Notification Center.

The Cupertino-based tech titan is also introducing more gestures for multitasking that allow users to simply slide between several apps with the new iPadOS. The new operating system is intended to run on all Apple iPad devices to enable the Cupertino-based tech titan to gain more freedom in improving the OS for larger screens. Just like the watch OS for Apple Watch, macOS for Mac, tvOS for Apple TV, the new iPadOS will be a separate but a familiar operating system to iOS users.

Additionally, the new operating system will bring improvement to the Files app. If you access the File app with the new OS, it comes with a column view similar to Finder on macOS. There is also an information pane that allows you to make several modifications on the files.

iCloud Drive now backs folder sharing while the Files app can now back SMB file. More importantly, the new iPadOS enables the Files app to support SD cards and USB drives. This means that you simply have to plug these devices or cards on your iPad and gain access to the files.

Now, you can import photos into several apps such as Lightroom without the need to use the Siri shortcut. The Safari browser also gets several updates with the new iPadOS. The browser now has a real download manager and comes with desktop-quality browsing.

Lack of computer-like controls on the iPad will also be addressed by the iPadOS. The Cupertino-based tech titan integrates fonts on the Apple App Store so you can utilize custom fonts in the apps. The company is also enhancing the copy-paste feature in the new operating system for iPad devices.

You can now use three fingers to copy and three-fingers spread to paste texts. The Apple Pencil is also getting its own update on the iPadOS. The latency of the device is now down to 9ms from the previous 20ms. The standard tool palette now gets a new update that enables third-party apps to utilize the latest controls.

Dragging the Apple Pencil from the corner of the iPad will allow you to grab a screenshot. All of these features add convenience to the users and make the new iPadOS a distinct improvement compared to what the company is currently doing with the iPhone iOS. During the WWDC event, Apple gladly announced that it will happily further customize the iPad experience.
