Former Wonder Girls member Sunmi recently caused quite a stir on Twitter when her statement supporting the LGBTQ+ was misinterpreted by fans to mean that she was coming out of the closet.
In a new tweet, Sunmi laughed off speculations that her statement during her Warning in Warsaw concert was intended to tell her fans that she was gay. "Haha I was saying 'I have so many different sides of me like dorky and LGBT queen...' Yeah, I support LGBT but don't get me wrong guys," she explained about her first post.
It can be recalled that the Kpop singer's first statement was: I have many different sides of me... like dorky and LGBT." The video was even captured on video by concertgoers and celebrated by many fans who think that she has confirmed her sexuality. At one point, Sunmi even highlighted a Pride Flag to pay homage to Pride Month.
Many netizens have rightfully understood this to mean that Sunmi meant that she too was part of the LGBT community. The former Wonder Girls member quickly rose to the trending topics on Twitter and at one point, made it to the top spot of worldwide Twitter trending topics, reported All Kpop.
It even sparked debates on Twitter where netizens were arguing what Sunmi's coming out could mean for her career. While there were those who were happy for her announcement, there were also those who worried that this would affect her negatively. There were plenty who expressed happiness over her courage and support for the LGBTQ community as well.
With Sunmi's clarificatory statement, many fans were still thankful for her support of LGBTQ, but some were disappointed that her statement was not the coming out that they were rooting to happen. Some fans shared understanding, saying that it is natural for Sunmi to get lost in translation because English was not her first language in the first place. The post has been shared 38,000 times and liked over 143,000 times.
As Sunmi continues her world tour for Warning, the self-declared LGBT queen also celebrated a milestone for her hit song Gashina. According to a tweet by her agency MakeUS Entertainment, the Gashina MV recently passed the 100 million views on youtube.
After performing in Amsterdam, Sunmi is scheduled to perform in Berlin's Huxley's Neue Welt on June 6 and Paris' La Cigale Stadium on June 7, reported Kpopme Entertainment.
