Square Enix, the game's developer, have finally put this speculation to a close when the studio said that the game will be playable on the upcoming PlayStation 5 console. While this comes as great news, it still begs the question: will the game be playable on older generation of consoles.
During the 2019 Electronics Entertainment Expo, Square Enix said that 'Final Fantasy 7 Remake' will be released as a multiple game, with the first part getting released on March 3, 2020. The game's massive scale was the reason behind this release approach. The original 'Final Fantasy 7' is composed of 3 discs, and this simply speaks as to how big the game is.
The first part of "Final Fantasy 7 Remake" is expected to tackle events in Midgar. This means that the full game will take some time to be fully released.
As of this writing, only the PlayStation 4 is the confirmed console that supports "Final Fantasy 7 Remake." During its press conference at E3 2019, Square Enix presented an extended trailer and extended gameplay presentation. The studio also confirmed that the game will be released in two Blu-ray discs once released on the PlayStation 4 console.
In an interview with Game Informer, Square Enix President and Chief Executive Officer Yosuke Matsuda said, "I believe that our teams have made it so that the game will support both the next generation and current generation of consoles."
It is still unknown whether the game will be released both for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. There are speculations claiming that the game will be released for the PlayStation 5 and will be available for the PlayStation 4 through backwards compatibility.
As for the PlayStation 5, Sony has yet to release the official specifications of its upcoming console. Nevertheless, it is confirmed that the console will be powered by an octa-core Ryzen processor from AMD. The console's graphics will handled by a custom-designed graphics card from AMD's Navi line of GPUs.
