On June 17, Commissioner General Min Gap Ryong of the Korean National Police Agency gave a speech at a press conference about the recent drug-related issues surrounding YG Entertainment. He noted that they would be forming a team to investigate the issue thoroughly.
Min Gap Ryong also shared that after learning a lesson from the Burning Sun scandal, they are conducting an even deeper investigation into the case. The Burning Sun scandal involved YG Entertainment former talent and former BIGBANG member Seungri. With the public’s attention zeroing in on Seungri and his close celebrity friend Jung for alleged sex bribery and sharing of secretly filmed sex videos, the two singers have been summoned for police interrogation.
When asked if they would be investigating YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun Suk, the Commissioner said, "We cannot disclose details about the investigation." The agency is currently facing suspicion of covering up a drug case involving iKON's B.I. and someone referred to as “A” in 2016.
The identity of “A” was eventually revealed and Han Seo Hee was named as the individual that the 2016 case was referring to. The former YG trainee claimed that Yang Hyun Suk interfered in the case by threatening her to change her testimony and making deals with the police.
After all the scandals that were going on under his wing, Yang Hyun Suk stepped down from his position at YG Entertainment. The CEO then released a statement regarding the matter.
“I am so sorry to the fans who love YG and our agency celebrities,” he said. “I am also sincerely apologetic to all of our employees who are silently continuing to do their work throughout the downpour of criticism.”
“I have been patiently tolerating words about the current situation that are too disgraceful and humiliating to mention as they have been told indiscriminately as though they are the truth,” Yang Hyun Suk continued. “However, I think it’s too difficult now. I think that there can no longer be a situation where YG, our agency celebrities, and fans are experiencing harm due to me.”
He then ended his lengthy post with, “I believe that the truth of the current media reports and malicious gossip will be revealed through investigations. Thank you.”
YG Entertainment is considered to be one of the "Big Three" companies in K-pop. The agency has produced numerous successful artists, which is why the scandals that it is facing right now shocked a lot of people.
