After the American recession of 2008, the auto industry was severely affected, and General Motors had to sacrifice several brands, including the Hummer. Now it is the market itself that is demanding models like the missing Hummer, SUVs of large proportions with off-road skills, and with that, General Motors is now planning to resurrect the Hummer, but with a huge change, it will be an electric car.
The Hummers were rustic trucks and SUVs of large size and power. The brand was marketed based on the military vehicle par excellence of the armed forces of the United States, and thanks to celebrities who continually use the Hummer truck in films, it grew in sales and popularity.
However, the main disadvantage of the Hummer cost its downfall. The enormous amount of fuel consumed by the vehicle does not only affect the environment but also affects the GM brand as it pays more tax on it and also directly affects the owner's pocket as fuel prices skyrocket. This is why an electric model could end this problem and bring Hummer back in the spotlight.
The plan is to create a Hummer electric vehicle, as reported by Bloomberg. Bloomberg is limited to saying that its sources are members of General Motors and have asked that their identities remain anonymous. They say that for now, it is just one of the many ideas that General Motors has to apply in its future strategy in which they seek to stop being a conventional brand of gasoline cars and start taking a step towards the electrification of their lineup.
The idea of Hummer could be a good move for the brand to appeal to nostalgia and also to enter the niche of the Jeep. The current North American market is consumed with great electric pickup trucks, SUVs and large crossovers with true off-road skills and the Hummer truck can be GM's main entry on this.
It is worth noting that General Motors is already working on the development of numerous electric models that will be launched during the next decade. All these models will be based on the company's new third-generation electric platform, the BEV3 architecture of General Motors. However, this scalable platform is intended for medium-sized or compact models. For future larger models, such as the already confirmed electric full-size pickups and other electric vans, a very different platform will be used, which have not been revealed yet.
It would also be interesting to know how expensive the electric Hummer would be and if there would be a market that will be interested in such a vehicle. Although if something is clear, is that thousands of Hummer fans and in general of off-road vehicles have shown interest in seeing the brand back. We'll just have to wait if this plan of General Motors will come to life.
