The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild announcement was definitely one of Nintendo's biggest surprises at E3 2019. Now, series producer Eiji Aonuma has revealed some new insight why Nintendo decided to create a sequel for the popular Switch game.

In an interview with Kotaku, Aonuma said the development team for the original Breath of the Wild had way "too many ideas" for new DLC, so the studio proposed to create a sequel.

"When we released the DLC for Breath of the Wild, we realized that this is a great way to add more elements to the same world. But when it comes down to technical things, DLC is pretty much data--you're adding data to a preexisting title," Aonuma said. "Initially we were thinking of just DLC ideas, but then we had a lot of ideas, and we said, 'This is too many ideas, let's just make one new game and start from scratch.'"

Speaking with IGN, meanwhile, Aonuma was asked if it'd be possible to play as Zelda in the upcoming sequel, or even the possibility of a co-op. Aonuma didn't deny either, but noted that Link and Zelda are often seen together, a co-op would be "very interesting."

The producer appears to be very enthusiastic talking about the new Zelda game, and also talked to Game Informer about why the team wanted to make Breath of the Wild 2. Accordign to Aonuma, he personally want to revisit Hyrule again and create a continuation out of that world. He then added that he always wanted to incorporate a new story and gameplay to Hyrule.

Aonuma later added that the director for the first Breath of the Wild, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, has returned to direct its sequel. The producer didn't identify other members of the ream, but it's say to assume for now that the team is largely made up of the same people who helped create the first Breath of the Wild. A proof to that is Aonuma returning as producer.

Details regarding the sequel to Breath of the Wild are sparse, but the first teaser trailer did have some details that piqued our interest. There's no indication when Breath of the Wild 2 will be released. We haven't been give a gameplay footage yet, and considering Zelda development often takes years, sadly, a 2020 release window seem unlikely.
