The pair, reportedly, developed feelings for each other while they were filming the 2016 hit series titled Descendants of the Sun. However, amid the endless dating rumors at the time, Joong Ki and Hye Kyo had, continually, denied the reports saying that they are an item.
In July 2017, many were shocked after Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo announced their plans to get married. The duo did not mention any other details about their big day and, instead, asked their avid followers to support them in the newest chapter of their lives. The Descendants of the Sun lead stars exchanged their wedding vows on Oct. 31, 2017, in Shilla Hotel in Seoul City, South Korea.
However, after less than two years of being married, Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo shocked their fans anew after their respective agencies confirmed the never-ending divorce rumors that made rounds online for quite some time already. "Personality differences" was cited to be the primary reason behind the infamous split.
On Friday, the father of Song Joong Ki, reportedly, sent a text message to his relatives and close friends about the current challenge that his son and Song Hye Kyo are facing. "I apologize for bringing such bad news suddenly. I believe that everything stems from me and Joong Ki being lacking, and we will conclude everything with sincerity," Song Yong Gak, reportedly, wrote in the text message. "Please watch over us and send us your encouraging guidance. I hope you have a healthy and happy day," he added.
Yong Gak, reportedly, explained the main reason why he has been silent after Song Joong Ki announced his plans to divorce from Song Hye Kyo. "I'm currently hospitalized for cataract surgery, so it is difficult for me to be on the phone," he stated. Rumors about Joong Ki's father had no knowledge about the divorce were debunked already.
Meanwhile, other reports claimed that Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo have been thinking about building a family before the infamous divorce announcement. An Entertainment Reporter claimed that Hye Kyo was preparing to get pregnant since last year. However, things, reportedly, changed when she started working for the Encounter series, which also starred Park Bo Gum.
