Prince George, along with his siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis and the other unborn royal, was given the freedom to marry a Catholic. Since 1688, the marriage of a crown successor to a Catholic is prohibited by the law.
Princess Charlotte was given the right to take her place in the line of succession based on the order of birth and not on gender through the Succession of the Crown Act signed in 2013. The act also gave the royal children the right to marry a Catholic. The act also allowed same-sex marriage if they choose to.
Reports claimed that Princess Anne fell in love with the Catholic Andrew Parker Bowles before he chose to marry Camilla because it was prohibited by the 1701 Act.
According to Penny Junor, a royal biographer, Andrew knew that his relationship with Princess Anne could never end in marriage, however much in love they may have been. He added that Princess Anne at that time was fourth in line and was not about to cause a constitutional crisis.
The British royalty allowed the marriage of royals to Muslims, Jews or Hindus, but they are now allowed to marry a Catholic since 1701 because they are considered a threat to the English crown.
Paul Flynn said during an interview with Channel 4 News that papists had the same status as al-Qaeda. Papists had the same status as al-Qaeda. He added that the idea of them marrying someone else [e.g., a Hindu or Quaker] was so outrageous that it wasn't discussed. He also said that it was never a law; you don't need to change it. If a royal marries a Catholic or Buddhist, the royal cannot change his or her religion because of the obligation as the head of the Church of England. The monarch needs to remain in communion with the Church of England.
The Act also allowed women to inherit the throne if she is the first-born child, and it allows marriage with divorcees or other types of person.
Same-sex marriage is now allowed to marry in the United Kingdom because of the Marriage Equality Act. The ACT applies to all UK citizens including the Royals. It means that the future successors of the throne could marry another man just like the other British citizens. However, the successor needs the approval of the monarchy to get married to ensure that the marriage doesn't affect the rest of the UK citizenry.
