Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had under 25 guests at the baptism of their son Archie Harrison last July 6. Most of them were family members, but one person was missing from the event.
Princess Diana's brother Earl Charles Spencer did not witness the baptism unlike his sisters Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, who even joined the family photo. According to The Sun, the earl was not invited to the family celebration because he and Prince Harry had a falling out.
A source intimated that Prince Harry has been distant from his uncle on his mother side and has always been much closer to his aunts. And while Archie was being baptized, the earl was in Hampshire to promote his new book at the Winchester Festival.
"The falling out goes back years and it is hard to see them ever making amends," the source said. "The earl is paying the price for his selfishness."
The hard feelings supposedly started when Princess Diana and Prince Charles split in 1993, and the People's Princess sought help from the earl if she could move into the family estate. However, Lord Spencer turned down Lady Diana because he didn't want to be involved in the media circus.
The earl wrote letters to his famous sister saying that he valued privacy. He offered for her to rent their farmhouse in Warwickshire or Norfolk instead. It's assumed that Prince Harry knew of these communications between the earl and her mother.
But Lord Spencer and his wife Karen Gordon attended Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018. However, they were seated at the back end of the St George's Chapel and were so much further than where the couple's high-profile friends like Serena Williams and George and Amal Clooney were seated.
Meanwhile, another source told People that it meant a lot to Prince Harry to have his aunts at Archie's baptism. The news outlet also reported that the Spencers were the firsts to learn of Archie's birth, including the earl.
"Harry is close to Diana's family," a source told the magazine. "In the same way that it was important for [Harry and Meghan] to include both Doria's and Diana's family in the official Buckingham Palace birth announcement, it meant a lot to them to share a photo of their full family."
The public has assumed that Princess Diana's sisters have been given the honor to become Archie's godparents. However, Prince Harry and Meghan said that they would never reveal this detail in public as Archie's godparents are not public figures.
