Big things are happening in Supergirl Season 5 as Kara Danvers will need to face Leviathan while J'onn J'onzz has his own problems to deal with. Not surprisingly, a huge new chapter also means that Supergirl needs a brand new look. Melissa Benoist has just revealed Kara's new suit which completely removes the superhero's trademark skirt. In addition to that, the Glee actress revealed why her character is looking so different in the CW show's upcoming season.

The idea of a skirtless suit certainly isn't a new one. After all, Red Daughter, Kara's clone in the series, is shown wearing a more comfortable tracksuit throughout Supergirl Season 4. It might finally be time for Kara to find a new suit that is more comfortable when she needs to fight some supervillains. Luckily, the first image of Kara from the fifth season confirms that the Kyptonian is ditching her skirt and adding some bangs.

Melissa Benoist shared the picture on her official Instagram account and it offers a glimpse at what the new Supergirl suit will look like. Kara still has all the notable features like the red cape, the red boots, the silver sash, and the S on the chest. The only thing missing happens to be the skirt that has been around since the first season. Interestingly, Kara is also sporting some new bangs in the photo.

So what's with the change? Melissa Benoist explained that it had a lot to do with her own comfort. The Whiplash star admitted that she had been asking for her character to be in pants in Season 1 and repeatedly begged writers to change the costume when "it's freezing cold in Vancouver" where the series is filmed. Luckily, her pleas were finally heard just in time for Supergirl Season 5.

Although comfort is one of the key reasons why Kara now gets to wear pants, it's not the only main reason why the new look has been introduced. Melissa Benoist pointed out that it also gives her character a more mature look for the upcoming season.

"I just think it's more adult," Benoist told Entertainment Weekly. "Part of my goal in this whole series for whenever the show ends, I just want there to be a very clear arc for this character that she evolved as a woman and found her femininity and her adulthood, just a self-discovery."

Melissa Benoist returns as Kara Danvers in Supergirl Season 5, which premieres on The CW on October 6.
