There's more trouble ahead for the Byrdes in Ozark season 3. Actor Jason Bateman teased that the upcoming installment will put the marriage of Marty (Bateman) and Wendy (played by Laura Linney) in the spotlight.
Speaking with Indie Wire, Bateman said that viewers have to watch out for Wendy in Ozark season 3. It seems most of the conflict will be coming from her side of the story, which isn't exactly bad especially with how her character has developed in the last two seasons.
At the end of Ozark season 2, Wendy, the suburban mom, has become more cunning in dealing with the drug lords and the money laundering troubles that her husband got the family into. She usurped her husband's position of power by carving a secret deal with the drug lord's top lawyer Helen (played by Janet McTeer), believing that this is the only way to save their family.
This fact only became clear to Marty in the last few minutes of the finale of Ozark season 2. He realized that his wife had blind-sighted him and made a decision for the family without letting him know.
Ozark season 3 showrunner Chris Mundy offered more insights on what's coming next.
"The third season to us is [about] what keeps you safe and whether or not hiding keeps you safe or attacking keeps you safe," the executive producer said. "In other seasons - between Season 1 and Season 2, certainly - we sort of left with a whole lot of plot we needed to answer, and we intentionally didn't leave ourselves with a whole lot of plot to answer for in Season 3. So it's more emotional within; we write everything through the marriage. So for us, it's all about that marriage."
In addition to Wendy becoming unhinged, her brother is also visiting the Ozarks. Mundy revealed via The Hollywood Reporter that Ben has a mental illness and his presence will destabilize the Byrds.
Ben will be played by Tom Pelphrey, who will apparently invite himself to the Byrds' home in the Ozarks to the surprise of the family. He will be a constant reminder to his sister of her personal reason to run away from her troubles.
Meanwhile, Ozark season 3 is still filming in Atlanta. Bateman has directed the first two episodes and, like the previous seasons, this installment will also have 10 in total.
Filming is expected to last until October this year. Ozark season 3 won't likely begin airing until the first half of 2020. Netflix has not yet confirmed its actual release date since production is still ongoing.
