Blizzard has revealed Overwatch's 31st hero in a new short animated trailer. The company's new video features Sigma, a scientist who appears to have survived a life-changing event that gave the ability to control gravity.
"Gravity is a harness," Sigma can be heard saying in the video. "I have harnessed the harness." In the words of Blizzard, Sigma is "an eccentric astrophysicist who hopes to unlock the secrets of the universe, unaware that he is being used as a living weapon."
The animation features a sequence of events that appear to be non-linear, showing a character studying the science of gravity and attempting to harness the power of a black hole. As with most villain backstories, something goes wrong during the experiment, sending Sigma to the hospital. In the video, the 31st hero is shown being haunted by a melody and remnants of his study.
Sigma is revealed at the end - a huge, burly character who can control gravity, eventually joining the terrorist group Talon.
Unfortunately for us, the clip stands as it is - just a teaser. It doesn't say much how Sigma will fit in Overwatch, and we have no idea what his class will be and what his special skills are.
As far as we know, Sigma is the fourth scientist character in the game, joining the ranks of Moira, Winston, and Mei. He's the second character tied with Talon, together with Moira, who in the end of the video is shown with the evil scientist. Other Talon members are also shown, including Doomfist, Reaper, Sombra, and Widowmaker.
Should Sigma follow the current hero release cycle - tank, attack, and support (that's Wrecking Ball, Ashe, and Baptiste respectively) -- it's likely he'll fall into the tank category. Overwatch will focus significantly on hero categories in the near future once the role queue systems will be released. This should allow players only to use characters using a pre-selected class during a competitive match or a quick play.
Last February, Blizzard introduced Baptiste as the 30th hero for Overwatch. The character will make its debut at a busy time for the company's multiplayer shooter, which introduced a new role queue feature last week. With this new system, players can focus better on specific roles and characters.
The Overwatch Workshop also debuted to early access earlier this year. And last week, Blizzard announced how home-and-away matches would work in the League in 2020.
Blizzard hasn't released additional info concerning Sigma as of writing. However, we expect that there will be more next week.
