Several years ago, researching wasn't really easy. You have to scan through different books for hours just to be able to find the answer you were looking for. But now, through the help of technology, everything is made easier.
But not all the things we can find through the internet is good. Since it is easier to post anything on the internet nowadays, contents about violence, killings, wars, crimes, pornography, and death are also becoming rampant online, which may be inappropriate for other audiences especially kids and the soft-hearted people.
Exposure to these contents can result in trauma, phobia, and can trigger different emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety. These could even lead people to do crimes, bullying, harassment, and other worst things.
Given this, filtering the contents online is crucial, especially in social media sites. Because of this need, social networking companies are working so hard to monitor every post and content found in their platform. They do this by hiring different people who are willing to spend 8-10 of their time managing these posts.
During their shift, these content moderators are given the task to either ignore or delete a post they find offensive. Mistakes have no space in their work as each one of them is dedicated to keeping their website safe for everyone.
Unfortunately, most of the contents these moderators are exposed to are too difficult to handle. Some of these people even tried to get out of their situation and quit their jobs. With inadequate training and psychological help, other moderators just choose to end their lives instead.
"I'm working as a moderator day today. And then... I quit. I need to stop, there's something wrong happening", shared by one unnamed moderator with the BBC Three.
In the Philippines, opportunities to work and earn for a living is not enough for everyone. That's why there are a lot of people who are trying to go outside their countries in hopes to earn and save money for their future and families.
Most people who choose to stay in the country are left with no choice but to settle in jobs that offers less salary or jobs such as these. As a matter fact, several thousand people in the Philippines still choose to work as content moderators for social networking sites, enduring the pains, traumas and hurt just to be able to earn enough and feed their families.
