It took almost three years and a half before True Detective returned to HBO for its third run. And sadly, the fans will be placed in a long-waiting game again as the show might take another long hiatus before a new season arrives.
The fans are not the only ones who are in the "waiting-game." As it happens, HBO is revealed to be in the same place, which is why a renewal decision is not yet heard from the network.
According to Deadline, a "slight update" about True Detective Season 4 has been given a few days ago. And from this update, it seems that no story or plot has been prepared yet to be pitched. Although there are already "ideas" for the new season, it seemingly appears that the series creator, Nic Pizzolatto, has not yet "landed" with the idea that he would be passionate about, HBO President of Programming, Casey Bloys, revealed during the TCA press tour.
It is worth remembering that Casey Bloys also mentioned the same thing earlier this year when True Detective Season 3 concluded its course. As per his statements, if there is already an idea for the new season, then HBO will hear it without rushing anything just like what they did with the latest installment.
Even so, Nic Pizzolatto revealed in an interview with IndieWire on April that he is excited for the story that he has come up for the new season. And without giving any hard details, he hinted that he is already in the talks with an "actor" who is presumably playing the main role for the new season.
But since HBO revealed more recently that nothing had been pitched yet, then there might be a change of plans on Nic's part. Besides, he also mentioned that he is "eyeing" to do other projects outside the limited crime series.
This "lack of optimism" from both parties truly saddens the fans. And in considering that True Detective Season 3 has received several nominations and accolades during its run, it will be disappointing if it will not return for a new season.
Nevertheless, the latest season has obtained the lowest average of viewership numbers. And although this could impact the show's future on the network, many critics emphasize that the latest season still received the best ratings among all the installments.
So far, these are the only known details about True Detective Season 4. And it seems that viewers and fans will need to wait a little longer to receive further updates about the show.
