Game of Thrones ended ahead of the release of George R.R. Martin's remaining novels, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. As the famed author already set a potential release date for these books, will it be possible for the show to get rebooted after the Season 8 backlash?
Game of Thrones Season 8 has received a lot of complaints and negative reviews. According to Express, one of the biggest criticisms the show has received is its conclusion even before Martin finish writing and publishing the books.
The show's Season 6, 7, and 8 have veered away from A Song of Ice and Fire story as the last two book installments have yet to publish. Now, he set a deadline for himself to release The Winds of Winter before the Science Fiction Convention in New Zealand in August 2020. Martin also made a plan for A Dream of Spring.
With the announcement, fans wonder if the books' release will affect the television series and give birth to a possible Game of Thrones reboot. Martin claimed his novels would be different from the show's storyline. "There are characters who never made it onto the screen at all, and others who died in the show but still live in the books," he said.
Will the novels give life to the theories that didn't make it on the series? Fans are hoping there will be Game of Thrones reboot to tell the original story that Martin will lay.
However, HBO president of programming Casey Bloys already shut down the idea of having a Game of Thrones reboot, saying there would be no network that would do it, per Business Times. The network finally addressed the fan-made petition, asking the show to be remade by a new set of "competent writers."
"David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e., the books) to fall back on," the petition read. "This series deserves a final season that makes sense."
As of this writing, the petition has gathered over 1.7 million signatures out of the 3 million needed. Bloys admitted there were few downsides to having a hugely popular show like Game of Thrones.
As fans have different ideas about how it should end, the network cannot please everyone. Although the petition just showed how passionate and enthusiastic fans are on the series, HBO would never consider doing a Game of Thrones reboot.
