The attendees at this year's EVO fighting game tournament had their hopes raised up when it was hinted that Metal Gear Solid's Snake would be arriving at Tekken 7. Unfortunately, it was all a gag. The official Twitter for Evo clarified the whole thing over the weekend.
"Just to clear things up, the Snake cameo video that we showed during Tekken finals was our idea of a little joke," the EVO account wrote. "It was not intended to imply a character reveal, and was done on our own, without consulting Bandai Namco. Sorry for any confusion!"
Following a match between Tekken 7 players Knee and Anakin, a very brief video of a Metal Gear Solid-style codec communication appeared on screen - that video did not appear on the official Evo stream. In that codec, Snake said to Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada, "That was some good-ass Tekken." According to commentators Mark "MarkMan" Julio and Aris Bakhtanians, that clip was "only for the people that were here [at Evo 2019]."
After the finals were over and Arslan Ash was hailed the winner, Bandai Namco made an appearance on stage to introduce season 3 and two new DLC characters. For the third season, two new characters are confirmed - Zafina and Leroy Smith. Two more are said to arrive next year, the trailer revealed.
The first character coming along with that new slate of content is Tekken 6's Zafina, who returns to the fight with her unique moveset. And this time, she taps into the power of Tekken 6's boss Azazel by utilizing his claw.
The second character is the kung fu master Leroy Smith, who in the video was revealed to have lost his family five decades ago, after being involved with a gang conflict in New York. He vowed to avenge his family and get back on people who have wronged him, returning to New York with a honed set of martial art skills.
Both Zafina and Leroy Smith will be arriving on Tekken 7 in September 2019 alongside the new Season Pass. Tekken 7's season 3 DLC roster will introduce new characters in the near future as well as an unknown feature. There will also be a new stage in 2020.
Along with the update are plenty of new moves for the characters, an update UI, a new play stats display, an improved practice functionality, a "tips" function, and a "My Replay" mode.
