Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip have been married for over 70 years. But, what did the monarch feel when she first met her husband?
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip tied the knot on November 20, 1947, at the Westminster Abbey in London. Since they have been together for decades, they already know each other from inside and out. But, what was Her Majesty's true impression when she met the Duke of Edinburgh?
The then-Princess Elizabeth met her soon-to-be husband at the Royal Navy College in Dartmouth back in 1939. During those times, the monarch was just 13-years-old, while Prince Philip was 18. But, despite their age difference, the Princess reportedly could not take her eyes of the Prince.
A 2014 documentary The Majestic Life of Queen Elizabeth II revealed what the then-Princess Elizabeth felt about her soon-to-be husband when they first met. Historian and biographer Robert Lacy shared how the spark struck the royal couple. He said one of the most extraordinary things about Her Majesty is that she fell in love and married the man she just met.
Lacy added that when Queen Elizabeth met Prince Philip in 1939, the latter was a dashing naval cadet at Dartmouth Naval College. While the monarch already met him at family occasions, the spark reportedly struck during that particular occasion. Royal author Philip Dampier also claims it was love at first sight and the royal couple started writing letters to each other.
Meanwhile, Majesty Magazine editor Ingrid Seward said Prince Philip was very dashing and handsome, which is quite unusual. Since Elizabeth was just 13 back then, she thought the young prince looks wonderful. The young princess reportedly never had any affection to other men, but then she sees Prince Philip as a handsome prince.
When she turned 20 in 1946, the prince reportedly asked young princess' father King George VI for his daughter's hand. The royal couple got engaged, and they announced the good news to the world during the 21st birthday of Elizabeth, and they now shared four children, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
In another related report, Queen Elizabeth is reportedly using a clever trick to calm Prince Philip during blazing rows. There were reportedly cries of "Rubbish," and "You don't know what you're talking about," but according to royal correspondent James Whitaker, the monarch has a technique to calm her husband down - she talks in riddles to confuse his logical mind.
