It has been confirmed that The Last Kingdom season 4 is happening on Netflix, and here's what we know so far about the fourth installment - including its possible release date, cast, plot, and other details.

Based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, The Last Kingdom becomes one of the most popular titles on Netflix. Many are comparing its drama and action to HBO's Game of Thrones - yet they are a different series. BBC America originally produced the series and co-produced by Netflix but, as of season 3, the streaming giant picked up the entire production and became a Netflix Original.

In December 2018, the series was renewed for a fourth season, and Netflix announced in April 2019 that filming of The Last Kingdom season 4 has started, which will consist of 10 episodes. The official Instagram page of the series also invites fans to join Uhtred next year as the battle continues, hinting that the fourth installment will be released in 2020.

Alexander Dreymon portrays the role of the main character Uhtred of Bebbanburg, and he will be back in The Last Kingdom season 4. Other cast members include Ian Hart (as Father Beocca), Joseph Millson (Aelfric), Toby Regbo (Aethelred), Emily Cox (Brida), Timothy Innes (King Edward), Eliza Butterworth (Aelswith), Mark Rowley (Finan), Millie Brady (Aethelflead), Magnus Bruun (Cnut), and Jeppe Beck Laursen (Haesten).

There will also be new faces in the upcoming season as Netflix confirmed Aethelred's new love conquest, with Stephanie Martini portraying the new role, Eadith. Also, Jamie Blackley joins the cast as Eardwulf, Aethelred's new right-hand man.

As for the plot of The Last Kingdom season 4, the next book in the series titled The Pagan Lord will jump ahead by a decade. If ever Netflix sticks to this timeline, new characters will likely arrive - such as Uhtred's children by Gisela, who are all grown up in the book.

In the official synopsis of The Last Kingdom season 4 provided by Carnival Films, the alliances between the kingdoms have been fractured following the death of Alfred. Uhtred believes this would be the right time to challenge his uncle Aelfric and take back his ancestral home, Bebbanburg.

However, fate leads him into different directions, as Uhtred realized his destiny had been tied to Alfred's dream of a united land. This, along with his feelings for Aethelflaed, will drive him back to politics and will threaten to break out into war.

The trailer of the upcoming season was not yet released as well, but viewers can still catch up with the last three seasons on Netflix. The series is no longer available in BB since the third installment was made solely by Netflix and Carnival Films.
