Read at your own risk: This article contains spoilers for Mindhunter Season 2.

Netflix's Mindhunter Season 2 has concluded its plot through its nine-episode run. And having a pretty short number of installments per season will not take too much time for any fan to finish the course. This is why when the second season arrived on the platform last August 16, which by the way, is just a few days ago, binge-watchers are now wondering if the show will return for a new season.

As any Netflix lover knows it, the streaming giant usually announces its shows' renewal decisions after a month or two of its actual premiere. And since Mindhunter Season 2 has just arrived, it is quite unlikely that the fans will get to know the answer in the next few weeks.

The possible period when Netflix announces the future of the show is between September and October. But, despite the fact that it hasn't been renewed yet, the fans and critics are certain that the platform will commission the third season of the true-crime series.

According to Screen Rant, Mindhunter is originally planned to run for five seasons, the least. This is because the show is largely inspired by the "real-life experiences" of Agent John E. Douglas, an FBI agent who handled several serial killer cases in the late 70's up to 1996. And considering that the first two seasons have already covered cases of 1977 up to 1981, there is still more than a decade of work to cover.

If the show returns for the third season, it is speculated to cover the 80's serial killer cases. And as per Bustle, this was the period when serial killers were at the peak in the United States. So, this is a good opportunity for the show to utilize, considering how the premise of Mindhunter goes.

The second season of the true-crime series largely focused on two biggest serial killer cases in the late 70s and early 80s. And these are the BTK Strangler and the Atlanta child murders.

At the finale, Wayne Williams was apprehended and arrested for his supposed crime of killing 29 people in the Atlanta Child Murders. But unfortunately, he was only convicted for two adult murders which left the 29 counts unresolved.

As for the BTK Strangler, he wasn't convicted until 2005 based on history. So, it is unsure if the Mindhunter will focus on targeting his back once it returns for a new season.
