Kevin Durant is not expected to suit up for the coming NBA season, meaning he will get a free pass on the first year of his deal with the Brooklyn Nets. It would be best to note that he signed a four-year pact with the Nets worth $164 million. It includes a player option in 2022.

Should the trend continue, there is a big chance that Durant may opt out and move to another team by that time. He will only be 33 by then and likely still at his peak. Even if he does opt in, he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2023 according to Spotrac. But the question here is will this be the two-time NBA champion's last stop?

Analyst Stephen A. Smith made an interesting point on the Bill Simmons Podcast, looking back at Durant's previous teams. In all, he singled out how KD wanted to be the main guy and had a hard time sharing the spotlight. He had to co-exist Russell Westbrook with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors. From the looks of it, that could be the scenario as well with Kyrie Irving with the Nets.

"When Kevin Durant went to Golden State, I never bought the Steph Curry thing because Kevin Durant always knew it was going to be Steph Curry's town," Smith told Simmons. "He went there to - he never ever intended to stay more .. longer than he stayed."

Smith points out valid things and this could be the scenario once Durant nears the twilight of his Nets deal. However, it may also depend on how his tenure in Brooklyn works out. If all goes well, he could be sticking around unless some issue crops up. In short, it all depends on how the Nets can roll with the 2014 NBA MVP.

There is no doubt that Durant has garnered almost anything an NBA player would want. He has little to prove unless he wants to rack up NBA rings to his collection. For his next deal, it would not be surprising if the second overall pick of the 2007 NBA Draft wants to be with a team he can call his own.

Like it or not, Smith hit something there when he said that Durant wants to be "the guy". But at that point of his career, there is no telling if KD can still be as dominant as he was the past years. Injuries are also a factor. He will need to adjust his playing style and avoid spending more time on the sidelines.
